Foam makes a room quieter. It won’t make it silent.

Open-cell spray foam is the best value in acoustic insulation, and it’s one of four things that control sound in a building. Here’s an honest account of what it fixes and what it doesn’t.

Two completely different problems, one word

Airborne noise travels through the air and then through the wall: conversation, a television, a dog, traffic. It’s what most people mean when they say soundproofing, and it’s what insulation genuinely helps with.

Structure-borne noise travels through the building itself: footsteps on the floor above, a washing machine on the joists, a door slamming, plumbing knocking in the wall. The vibration moves through solid material, and insulation in a cavity does very little about it.

If your complaint is footsteps from upstairs, foam in the ceiling below will disappoint you. Say what the noise actually is when you call — it changes the answer completely, and we’d rather tell you before you spend money.

Four things control sound. Insulation is one.

Roughly in order of how much each one moves the needle on a typical wall.

    Mass

    Heavy things block sound. A second layer of drywall, or a denser material, does more than anything else on this list — and it’s not insulation work.

  2. 02

    Decoupling

    Breaking the physical path so vibration can’t travel straight through: resilient channel, sound clips, staggered or double studs. This is what actually addresses structure-borne noise.

  3. 03

    Absorption — this is us

    Filling the cavity so sound energy is dissipated instead of resonating inside a hollow wall. Open-cell foam does this well, and it’s the cheapest of the four by a wide margin.

  4. 04

    Sealing

    Sound leaks through gaps like water. Outlets back to back, a gap under the door, an unsealed top plate — any one of them undoes a lot of the work above. Foam handles this as a side effect of filling the cavity.

Foam covers items three and four. If your expectation is a genuinely quiet room — a drum kit, a nursery next to a busy road, a home studio — you also need items one and two, and that’s a carpentry and drywall job rather than an insulation one. We’ll tell you that at the assessment.

What each step is worth

Approximate ranges for a standard interior wall. Real assemblies vary, and a rating measured in a lab is always kinder than a wall built on a Tuesday.

The pattern worth noticing: the first step is cheap and gives a clear, immediate improvement. Each step after it costs considerably more for a smaller subjective gain. For most homes — an office, a bedroom, a room next to a laundry — the first step is where the value is, and going further is a decision about a specific problem rather than a general upgrade.

Low frequency is the honest exception. Bass and heavy machinery pass through nearly everything on this list, and controlling them needs mass and decoupling rather than anything we install.

Where this is worth doing

The rooms people call us about, and what to expect in each.

Home office

The most common request since everyone started taking calls from a spare bedroom. Cavity fill plus sealing around the door usually solves it entirely.

Media room

Works well for keeping dialogue and mid-range in the room. Subwoofer output is a different conversation — that needs mass and decoupling.

Party walls in two-family homes

Common in Union, Hudson and parts of Philadelphia. Real improvement is possible, though only during a renovation when the wall is open.

Bedrooms and nurseries

Especially a bedroom sharing a wall with a bathroom or living room. Plumbing noise in the wall is structure-borne, so set expectations there.

Mechanical and laundry rooms

Containing the noise at its source is far more effective than trying to block it in every room it reaches.

Rooms facing a busy road

Exterior walls facing a highway or flight path. Worth knowing that in most homes the windows, not the walls, are the weak point.

The one job where the cheaper foam is better

Everywhere else on this site, closed-cell is the premium option. For sound, it isn’t.

Open-cell foam is soft and porous, so sound energy entering it gets dissipated. Closed-cell is rigid and dense, which makes it a good insulator and a poor absorber — and because it’s stiff, it can actually transmit vibration between the framing it bonds to. For an interior partition, open-cell is both the better acoustic material and roughly half the price.

If someone quotes closed-cell for an interior soundproofing wall, ask why. There are occasional reasons, but on a standard partition it costs more and performs worse at the one job you’re buying it for.

The honest note on small jobs: bringing a rig out for one wall costs nearly what it costs for a whole floor, so a single partition carries a minimum charge. If you’re doing acoustic work as part of a renovation with other areas open, adding it to that visit is far better value than booking it alone.

Soundproofing generally doesn’t qualify for energy rebates, since it isn’t an efficiency measure — unless it’s an exterior wall, in which case it may. Other pricing is on the main pricing section.

Soundproofing questions

  • No, and no insulation will. Low frequency carries enormous energy and long wavelengths, and it passes through cavity insulation almost unaffected. Controlling bass takes mass and decoupling — double drywall, sound clips, a separate stud wall — and even then it’s reduced rather than eliminated. Foam will cut the voices and the television around it, which for many people is most of the annoyance, but we won’t sell it to you as a bass solution.

  • Barely. Footsteps are impact noise — the vibration goes into the joists and travels through the structure, so the air gap you just filled was never the path. Filling the floor cavity does reduce airborne sound between levels, so voices and a television upstairs get quieter, but the thumping stays. Real solutions live on the floor above: underlayment, carpet, or a decoupled ceiling below.

  • Yes, for interior partitions. Open-cell is soft and porous, so it dissipates sound energy that enters it. Closed-cell is rigid and dense — excellent thermally, poor acoustically — and being stiff it can transmit vibration through the framing it’s bonded to. It’s also roughly double the price. This is the one application on our site where the cheaper material is the correct one.

  • It depends entirely on your target. For an office where you want calls to stay private and the hallway to stop intruding, cavity fill plus sealing is usually enough. For a drum room, a rental unit party wall, or a nursery next to a highway, you need mass and decoupling too — and that’s your drywall contractor’s work, not ours. We’ll tell you which category you’re in, and we’re happy to coordinate our part around theirs.

  • Some, but check your windows first. In most houses the exterior wall already outperforms the windows by a wide margin, so filling the wall improves the weakest link by very little. Sealing the wall does help with the higher-frequency hiss of traffic, and if the wall is open for other reasons it’s worth doing. If exterior noise is the whole reason you’re calling, spend the money on the glass.

  • Seal the gaps, then fill the cavity. Sound behaves like water — a small opening undoes a large amount of good construction. Back-to-back electrical outlets, the gap under a hollow door, an unsealed top plate, a duct running between two rooms. Several of those you can fix yourself in an afternoon for very little, and we’ll happily point them out during the assessment even though there’s no work in it for us.

  • On an interior wall, not really — both sides are already heated, so there’s no meaningful temperature difference to insulate against. What you do get is more even room-to-room temperature and less noise transfer through shared ducts. On an exterior wall or a wall against a garage, you get both benefits at once, and that’s the case where a single job pays off twice.
